Can we ever pay our good teachers enough? The Rotary Club of Cullman wanted to do something to help teachers with their out-of-pocket expenses. Like so many of us, in any type of job, we use our personal funds to make our environment a better place: a plant here, a cute framed photo there. Or in the case of teachers, those extra books that encourage their students to read, read, read. So, back in October 2006, the Rotary Club approached Deb Laslie of Deb’s Bookstore in Cullman to see what could be done. The result of their collaboration went into effect in November and has been very successful. The program they came up with allows teachers to purchase books for their classrooms at a quarter of the retail price. Sound too good to be true? Area teachers think so, but are grateful, nonetheless. Teachers need only visit Deb’s Bookstore, pick out the used books they need for their classrooms and Deb handles the rest. The Rotary Teacher Credit Account can be used for used books only.
“The Teachers are so excited when I tell them about it. I know several have written thank you notes to the Rotary Club to express their appreciation. It really is such a helpful and thoughtful thing Rotary has done for our area teachers,” says Deb, owner of Deb’s Bookstore “I see teachers every day spending their own money to supplement their classroom books. While grants and other funds are available, sometimes it’s just not enough. This is a very unique program. The teachers can’t wait to get back to their schools to spread the word.” Spreading the word is vital to the success of the program. “We WANT them to use this credit,” explains Rotary member Tom “Big Doc” Williamson. “That’s why we set up the fund and that’s what it’s for.”
